1. DEFINITION

Mental Retardation (MR), now commonly referred to as Intellectual Disability (ID), is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by:

• Significant limitations in intellectual functioning (reasoning, learning, problem-solving).

• Limitations in adaptive behaviour, which covers conceptual, social, and practical skills.

• Onset during the developmental period (before age 18 years).

According to the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD), IQ score of below 70 is suggestive of intellectual disability.
